No lawn mowers required

The sunshine is coming back and the grass is getting taller. This is great in the fields where we rotate the herds, of course. But what about the lawn? It seems a shame to use a lawn mower when there's a hungry herd of sheep down the hill!

"It seemed a little silly to get such long, luscious grass in the yard and then, as a regenerative farm, go and mow it," laughed Summer Spell, farm apprentice. I would walk through the yard and think "This is so much food!"

So she got everyone to agree to bringing them up to graze.

First, a permitter fence was set up around the house and along the road the keep the sheep contained.

Then, after dinner last week, the students and family walked down to Owens field to round up the sheep and bring them "to work."

"We got them up on the road towards the house and it seemed, suddenly, like a lot of sheep!" said Summer.

But they settled in and are eating the grass down to a manageable length. It is fun to sit on the porch and watch them. While I wouldn't say they are all that much quieter than a lawn mower, their are much cuter and their work efficiency is something to behold!
