Here's a little collage of photos from the dairy and beef enterprises at Deck. Because it is springtime, there are lots of calves being born and the animals appear just as happy with the new season as you and I are.
In the dairy herd we have 4 new calves so far in 2025 and there are another 38 pregnant cows expected to give birth by the end of summer. The first dairy calf was born to Rosa in early March and he has now grown into a large, curious teenager.
There were 19 beef calves born so far this year, including 11 beautiful white ones. They look magical laying in the green fields! There are another 17 pregnant cows in the beef herd.
One black and white calf was struggling to nurse from his mama, so Farm Manager Raul Lopez fed him his colostrum from a bottle, ensuring he would get the needed nutrients. This cow has supernumerary teats: she has six rather than the standard four, and they all function. The calf and mama were kept in the barn for a couple of days so we could make sure that they were figuring it all out.
